Why Choose Health & Social Care?

Health & Social Care courses are well established at Shelfield College with results being consistently good. Students are able to use the course on offer to provide a preparation for employment or as a basis for further study. This particular course is very suitable for people who want to work with the children, old people or adults who are unable to look after themselves due to illness, accident or birth defects.

What is a BTEC Course?

The BTEC First Diploma is a vocationally related qualification. This means that the course is designed to develop skills that would be required in work. It is the equivalent to 4 GCSE’s at grades A* - C. The assessment for this qualification is based upon portfolio evidence no examinations have to be taken.

You will study:

Over the two years you will complete 6 units. In year 10 you will study three units:

Communication and Individual rights within the health & social care sectors.

People who work in Health & Social Care need to be good communicators so that they can develop relationships with the people that they care for or work with. This unit helps you gain understanding of the skills in communication and the rights that individuals have when they are being cared for.

Individual needs within the health & social care sectors.

  • What are individual needs?
  • What factors influence the health and needs of people?
  • What risks are there to health and well being?
  • How can we plan to improve our own health and well-being.
  • What hazards are there in Health & Social Care Settings?
  • What laws are there about Health & Safety?

Human Lifespan Development

What happens to us from the time that we are conceived to the time that we die?

In this unit we chart the development of people from conception to birth, infancy, childhood, adolescence, adulthood and old age. We also look at the factors that affect development.

In Year 11 you will study :

Creative and Therapeutic activities in Health & Social Care

The impact of diet on health

Health & Social Care Services

We are currently looking into the possibility of offering a First Aid Course to complement the qualification.
