GCSE
The syllabus has been devised to combine the necessary breadth and depth of study with the freedom of choice required to accommodate a wide range of abilities, interests and material resources.
Students are able to work with a range of two and three-dimensional materials towards a Fine Art or Graphic Design final piece. Some particularly conscientious and well-motivated students may have the opportunity to take two different endorsements; enabling them to obtain two separate GCSE passes in Art.
Of the final marks, up to 60% is awarded for coursework, which must consist of two projects, including all supporting studies. The remaining 40% may be gained during the final, externally set, controlled test, for which students are allowed 6 weeks preparation time.
Awareness of the works of other artists and cultures is an important part of the course and a third of the marks are awarded for critical studies, which, through theoretical work demonstrates the student’s understanding of Art history.
The college has a long tradition of success in this course and selected pieces of GCSE work are annually featured in the printed and widely distributed collage calendar.

FIRST CERTIFICATE AND DIPLOMA Btec
Essentially a vocational course, a Btec in Art and Design concentrates on the knowledge, practice and understanding of the subject.
The aim is to encourage students to develop:

  • The use of 2D and 3D visual language
  • The skills and understanding all craftspeople and designers need in their workplace, including health and safety issues.
  • Skills in materials, techniques and technology.
  • An understanding of past and present developments in art, craft and design.

Students entering the course need to have achieved at least level 5 in National Curriculum in Art.
The course consists of up to 6 units. There is no terminal examination all marks are based on coursework.

Art and Design is both a form of communication and a means of expression of ideas and feelings. It is a language, which compliments those of the literary, mathematical, scientific and factually based subjects, and is essentially concerned with the development of the complex mental processes involved in visual perception and aesthetic experience. Through direct personal expression, Art and Design fosters and encourages imagination, conceptual thinking, observation, analytical abilities and practical skills. The direct experience of practical and theoretical studies leads to a fuller understanding of the part played by visual arts and crafts, in the varied history of mankind’s development. In doing so, it widens cultural horizons and enriches the individual’s personal resources. As a result, particular enjoyment and aesthetic pleasure are experienced and self-confidence engendered. It is advisable that each candidate has their own A2 or A1 folder to store their coursework safely, these and other art equipment may be purchased through the art department at competitive prices. Two option courses are available; GCSE in Fine Art and/or Graphic Design or Btec in Art and Design.
